Spotlight: Franklinton Award Honorees / Print Week Reminder

The Franklinton Award

In 2008, the Printing Industries of Ohio • N.Kentucky began presenting this prestigious award to a member of the industry who had made significant contributions to our central Ohio graphic arts community as opposed to a community leader/contributor.  This year, there are two deserving recipients of the Franklinton Award.

Mary M. Held

Mary and Bernie Held raised four children and together purchased Old Trail Printing Company in June 1964.  Mary and Bernie built the company from a letterpress shop to a large commercial printing company.  Upon Bernie’s early death in 1987, Mary not only had to deal with the loss of her husband, but had to step up and run her company.  Mary continued to build the company and even made it the largest woman-owned commercial printing company in the Midwest for several years.

Mary has a very giving spirit and believed in giving/sharing with the employees of Old Trail.  She also has donated over the years to many worthwhile organizations and has supported the preservation of St. Leo’s Parish in Columbus, where she was baptized, attended school, and was married.

Sue Horn

In 1972, Sue joined Borden, Inc. and also attended Franklin University in the evenings where she majored in Accounting. While at Borden, Sue worked in a variety of financial and administrative capacities and was promoted in 1978 to Financial Analyst for Borden’s Food Division.

While raising a family, Sue joined her family's business, Old Trail Printing, on a part-time basis as an estimator and assuming HR and financial responsibilities.

When Old Trail purchased Mid-Ohio Graphics in 1994, Sue was named General Manager and continued to serve in an administrative capacity at Old Trail. She served as MOG General Manager until Spring of 2000 when Old Trail merged the two companies. Sue returned to Old Trail as Principal to handle all administrative, accounting and Human Resource functions.

Sue served on the Printing Industries of Ohio and N. Kentucky Board for 10 years and also served on many committees. In addition, she serves on the Printing Industry Education Fund Board. (PIEF).

Sue retired in January, 2017. She continues to serve on the PIEF Board and helps promote students to gravitate towards a career in the printing industry.  Sue also volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House once a week, enjoys spending time with her grandchildren and mom, Mary.
