PIA Scores Hat Trick

Good news came in threes last week on PIA’s efforts to combat demand destruction. The House of Representatives acted on separate legislative initiatives supported by industry, including passing appropriations language blocking the Food & Drug Administration from moving to e-labeling on provider prescription information and passing bipartisan legislation out of the House Ways & Means Committee to reinstate printed, mailed annual Social Security earnings statements (Congress quietly eliminated print in favor of online accounts; an Inspector General report found only 43 percent of Americans accessed online statements in 2018). Finally, the House passed an election security bill mandating the use of paper ballots in future Federal Elections. While these are all niche issues, the action certainly builds momentum for PIA’s narrative on Capitol Hill that ink on paper is relevant, secure, and should be preserved as a consumer option on multiple fronts.
